While on medical leave, Fort Myers High School football coach Sam Sirianni Jr. suffered a stroke. The 61-year-old now works toward recovery at a Cape Coral rehab center.

"I just went to get up that morning and I just stumbled; my left side just wouldn't function," said Sirianni, according to News-Press. "They found I had a small blockage behind my ear."

Medical staff noted mild effects, mainly impacting movement and strength on his left side.

"I'm doing much better; I've made great progress in just a few days," Sirianni said. "Right now, it's just about getting my life and my health in order. I just kept putting it off, putting it off."

Medical staff expect him to spend another week at the center before switching to home-based care. Sirianni plans to make key lifestyle shifts to prevent future health issues.

Under his watch, the Green Wave started strong in 2025. They beat Mariner in a close 30-27 match, then claimed victory over Lehigh Senior 33-27.

For the first time since 1986, Sirianni missed the sidelines when his team faced Cypress Lake on Sept. 5, 2025. Despite players showing support with a "We heart Sammy" banner, the Green Wave fell 20-7. Sirianni has built an impressive 175-81 record across 24 seasons.

"I can't even tell you what that was like last Friday," Sirianni said about his absence. "There were a lot of emotions. But the kids, I've talked to them and they've reached out. But I want this group to move forward as best they can."

Next up, Fort Myers High, ranked 188th statewide, faces South Fort Myers.
