Publix added nine stores to its chain across the Southwest in September. The new locations spread across seven states — three in Florida, two in Kentucky, and single stores in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
"We look forward to welcoming both longtime and new customers and associates to their new Publix stores, and to becoming a valued part of each of these special communities," said Nicole Krauss, Publix spokesperson, according to USA TODAY.
The Fort Myers store reopened on Sept. 11, 2025, after major renovations that took 14 months, including a new eating space upstairs. Doors will open at two more Florida locations in Orlando and Coral Gables on Sept. 25.
Louisville, Kentucky, had two stores open earlier in the month on Sept. 3 and 6. Spring Hill, located in Tennessee, opened its store on Sept. 13. The Braselton, Georgia, and Greenville, South Carolina stores will open on Sept. 17, and the Charlotte, North Carolina, location opens on Sept. 20.
Currently, Publix runs 1,417 stores in eight states. The story started in Winter Haven back in 1930. That's when George W. Jenkins set up his first shop. By November 1940, he'd created something new — the first Publix Super Market. It stood out with air conditioning, bright lights, and doors that opened by themselves.
