Rats from a rundown Cape Coral house are making pets sick in the area. The building at 474 NE 2nd Ave. has had multiple code violations since mid-September.

After checking the site on Sept. 16, 2025, city workers set another visit for October. Next door, dead rats litter yards while pets suffer from parasites.

"You know, living in other cities, they would condemn this house," said Brenda Shulpius, according to WINK News. "I don't know what the problem is with the city of Cape Coral and why they cannot issue condemnation orders."

Fleas from the rats spread tapeworms to nearby dogs. Instead of more fines, residents want officials to shut down the property.

If owners ignore the warnings, fines are issued. A city worker stated, "When Code Compliance receives a complaint, its first step is to inspect the reported property to confirm allegations."

Written notices mean owners must act fast. Shulpius fired back: "Condemn the house. What are you waiting for? What's the problem? Why are there no condemnation orders? All I hear is, oh, we'll fine them. Fines are not going to take care of the problem."

The site stays under watch, with violations still active. October's follow-up visit will show if the owner took steps to clear out the pests.
