A faulty software change at SunPass has stuck Cape Coral motorists with wrong bills and extra charges from LeeWay, despite their active SunPass accounts. The mix-up affects toll payments from May through June 2025.

"In the last two weeks, I've received two invoices from LeeWay stating that I didn't pay toll charges for the months of May and June," said Suzy Lopez, according to Gulf Coast News.

Each $2 toll now carries an extra $3 fee. Four trips through toll gates now cost $20 - more than double the standard $8 SunPass rate. The bills have shocked many drivers.

Elizabeth Hamak Wenzel highlighted the costs. "The SunPass is a $2 toll. When LeeWay sends these invoices, it's a $2 toll and a $3 administrative fee per toll. So your $8 worth of tolls they missed becomes a $20 bill," said Wenzel.

The glitch stems from new software that's disrupting normal payment processing. At toll points, the system should first check SunPass transponders, then match license plates if needed. The plate-matching part isn't working right now.

The situation has sparked worry about widespread billing errors. "A lot of them are very concerned as to why, if there's a balance and you're picking up my plate, why aren't you seeing this in your system?" Lopez said.

A Lee County official admitted to the technical issues. They advised drivers with incorrect charges to contact SunPass and start a service request. For those with valid accounts, LeeWay plans to remove the extra fees.
