By the end of 2025, speed detection cameras will be installed at 10 North Port school zones after a split 3-2 Commission vote. Drivers who speed 11 mph above limits during school hours will face $100 fines.

"There is nothing more important than protecting the lives of our children," said Commissioner Barbara Langdon, according to Fox 4.

Since the school year started, police have written 214 tickets in school zones. Police Chief Todd Garrison spoke bluntly, "Ladies and gentlemen, I have gone to those houses and I have delivered death notifications. We have had children struck in school zones in this city."

The cameras will turn on 30 minutes before school starts and switch off 30 minutes after dismissal. They won't run during breaks when students stay home.

There will be a 30-day warning period warning drivers before the new citations are enforced.

At Cardinal Mooney High School on Fruitville Road, similar cameras cut speeding by 80%. RedSpeed Florida LLC will install the cameras for free and get a portion of the fines.
