On Oct. 20, 2025, Fort Myers officials accepted a $330,000 grant from the state to construct a five-slip boat dock at Legacy Island Park. The funds came through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The new dock will stretch along the southeast edge of Legacy Island. Tucked away in the Caloosahatchee River near the city center, this structure marks a key step in transforming the area into a community space.
This funding pushes ahead plans for a water-based gathering spot. The city aims to add paths and sandy shores, making river access simple for visitors.
Construction represents one phase in a multiyear effort. Staff want to boost access to waterfront spots near the city's heart. Changes at Legacy Island fit into broader efforts to connect the city center with its waterways. When complete, the dock will welcome boats to this natural space.
