The Florida Department of Transportation District One is running a study with a goal to fix traffic problems and make US 41 safer where it meets Six Mile Cypress Parkway in Lee County. Officials held a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, for people to attend in person, and they'll run another one online on Thursday, Oct. 30.
The study examines how many cars the intersection can handle and whether it's safe enough. This spot acts as a gateway for drivers headed to the beaches. When motorists travel west on Six Mile Cypress, they cross US 41, then the road becomes Gladiolus Drive.
Three plans are being considered: creating a bypass for Old Gladiolus Drive, building an overpass on US 41 that would carry traffic in both directions, and adding a crossover for drivers turning left from the northbound lanes of US 41. If the project moves forward, it could make things safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers while also reconfiguring the intersection so it can handle more vehicles.
The Midpoint Bridge will shut down from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 11 for the Midpoint Madness Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk. Drivers should use the Cape Coral Bridge instead, or take the U.S. 41 and Business 41 bridges as backup routes.
In September, 550,259 passengers passed through Southwest Florida International Airport. The Lee County Port Authority released these numbers. This represented a jump of 5.2% compared to September 2024.
So far this year, passenger traffic at the Fort Myers airport has climbed 0.1 percent. Delta carried the most passengers in September with 132,318. Southwest came next with 100,318, then American with 87,250, United with 82,316, and JetBlue with 52,459.
