Santiago Londono, 19, was arrested earlier this week after Lee County Sheriff's deputies clocked him at 106 mph on the Edison Bridge in Fort Myers. This marked the enforcement of Florida's new super speeder law, which took effect July 1.
Deputies used radar to confirm the car's speed on the bridge. Londono had a friend riding with him when authorities stopped him.
The teen told deputies his mother was rushing him to take a friend home. "I'm so so sorry, sir. I was just we were in the bridge, and my mom was rushing me to go," said Londono, according to WINK News.
He added that he slowed down near the end of the bridge. Deputies told him that wouldn't prevent his arrest.
Florida's new law makes driving over 100 mph a criminal offense that allows arrest. Deputies reminded Londono during the stop that what used to be a speeding ticket now means handcuffs.
Santiago Carcamo Londono was booked into the Lee County Jail and faces a charge of moving traffic violation: operating a vehicle at over 100 mph, a speed that could threaten people or property. He spent Sunday night locked up.
The 19-year-old was released on bond Monday afternoon, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to slow down on local bridges and major roads. High-speed incidents on the Edison Bridge have climbed in recent months, law enforcement says.
