Estero officials gave the green light to a $19.5 million construction contract on Dec. 18. Phase one of the Estero Sports Park will rise along Williams Road beside Estero High School, creating shared space for students and townspeople.
Workers will tackle site prep, infrastructure, and roads. Crews break ground next month and will wrap up by October 2026.
This phase lays the groundwork for what town leaders envision as a central gathering spot. The work will sync with other construction happening nearby.
Designers mapped out softball diamonds, baseball fields, and a football pitch. A driving range and bowling center will round out the offerings.
Ronald Darden lives in Estero and backs the plan. "I think it's amazing. I think it's-- it's prime for the area," Darden said, per Gulf Coast News. "We talked about a little before that it's needed in the sense where the kids aren't out as much as they used to be. And the sports gets them out."
Joe Corcoran has lived here for years and watched the land transform. "I've watched it grow from the old driving range that was there for many years, into this," Corcoran told Gulf Coast News. "It's becoming this huge sports complex, that it's going to have bowling and driving ranges and other sports activities."
Darden believes young people will benefit from outdoor options. "I like the fact that they'll have someplace to go. They can have some outdoor activities instead of being on their phones and get some fresh air and do some really healthy activities," he said.
A driving range once occupied this patch of land. Positioning the park next to the high school means student athletes can walk over while neighbors drive just minutes to use the same fields and courts when construction wraps next fall.
