Hundreds of thousands of toys are being distributed across Lee County as the United States Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program works to ensure families in need can still experience a traditional Christmas. Donations range from bikes to Play-Doh and Hot Wheels, made possible through widespread community support.
Michelle Delashmutt, a mother of six, said her family has never needed help buying Christmas presents until this year. Financial strain followed the birth of twins over the summer and a serious medical issue that disrupted her ability to work, making Toys for Tots a critical resource for her family.
"One had a medical condition, and she was in the hospital for quite some time, so I haven't been able to go back to work," Delashmutt said. "It's been hard."
Delashmutt said the assistance carries emotional weight beyond the gifts themselves, offering reassurance during a stressful time. "I get goosebumps. It's nice to be able to rely on the community for things like this when you are in a time of need," Delashmutt said.
Toys for Tots of Lee County expects to distribute Christmas presents to more than 32,000 families this season, an increase of roughly 1,000 families compared to last year. As the distribution period comes to a close, any remaining toys will be donated to Lee County non-profits to continue supporting families beyond the holiday season.
Marines play a direct role in collecting, organizing, and distributing toys throughout the county. Private First Class Trenton Martinez said participating in the program reinforces the importance of giving back to families facing hardship during the holidays.
"If I was in their shoes, I would want something to help me as well," Martinez said. "It makes me feel pretty good knowing that what I do actually makes an impact to all these families and kids."
In addition to providing material assistance to needy children, this program demonstrates the emotional and practical assistance given to each family through the support and connection of the military, as well as local organizations, during what can often be a very difficult time for them, the holiday season.
