Saint Michael Lutheran School will hold its eighth annual Touch-A-Truck event on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its campus at 3595 Broadway in Fort Myers. More than 50 trucks and vehicles will be on display for children to examine up close, and admission won't cost a dime.
Kids can honk horns, open doors, climb into the driver's seat, and chat with local leaders who operate these machines. Fire trucks and police vehicles will be there. A Coast Guard boat might show up, along with bucket trucks, dump trucks, farm equipment, delivery trucks, commercial lawnmowers, side-by-sides, and ATVs. A helicopter will land if the weather cooperates.
Drake Ready Mix and Dynamic Equipment Group will present the event. Drake Ready Mix plans to bring both a cement mixer and tractor trailer to campus.
The first hour runs from 10 to 11 a.m. and offers a sensory-safe time. Lights stay off. Sirens remain silent. Horns and other sounds that might upset young or sensory-sensitive children are not allowed during this window. Therapy Works of SWFL will sponsor this hour and provide a sensory-safe playroom inside where kids can retreat when they need a break.
Activities for children of all ages will include bounce houses, face painting, art activities, and vendor games. The event is open to the public.
Terry Drake Jr., president and founding partner of Drake Ready Mix, explained that it's a "hands-on experience that gives children a behind-the-scenes look at the vehicles they see throughout their daily lives. " Drake Ready Mix has been a presenting sponsor since the start of the tradition.
The school's PTL organizes the event. All Star Equipment Rental and Sales, ALTA Equipment Company, Gulf Shore Cooling, HONC Industries, LCEC, Lee Mar Building and Construction Corporation, Russ Berner Construction, Seabreeze Communications, and Sunset Air and Home Services support the event.
Participating vehicles will be announced on the Facebook page for the eighth annual Touch-A-Truck. Families can visit Facebook.com/SaintMichaelLutheranSchool or call 239-939-1218.
