The Cape Coral Fire Department issued an alert Sunday after scammers began sending texts to residents. The messages promised department shirts at a $10 discount. They weren't real.

"Please remember that the Cape Coral Fire Department will never solicit or try sell you anything via text," the department said, per Gulf Coast News.

Residents wanting to purchase items related to the department can buy calendars that were created in partnership with the Cape Coral Animal Shelter and are available at CCFD Headquarters, the shelter itself, or through the department foundation website.
