Construction on U.S. 41 near the Edison Bridge has run longer than planned for its opening phase. Work kicked off Jan. 6, 2025.

FDOT cited changes and re-sequencing that caused lane shutdowns to stretch past expectations. The opening phase was meant to take about five weeks, per WINK News.

"It's just become a huge mess," said a local resident who asked not to be named.

The construction seeks to boost safety, improve traffic movement, and cut down on accidents through two-way access and full median openings. Crews wrapped up underground tasks, laid concrete, and built new sidewalks. Workers also began putting up new lights, street signs, and pedestrian hybrid beacons.

"I think it's taken way too long, and traffic is just too hectic here," another resident remarked.

Traffic patterns changed again in September. That marked phase two beginning.

"I've watched it progress. And sometimes it's not doing anything, and other times they're working on it," said Steven Berger, who lives nearby. "I think the turning lanes are what's important."

Drivers face the worst backups twice each day when traffic peaks. Morning and evening trips have gotten tougher.

"It gets crowded two times a day, morning and night. The rest of the time, it's easy," Berger said.

Despite longer lane shutdowns and driver frustration, FDOT stands by its timeline. The agency says all construction will finish by early 2026.
